Henrietta Skala Baritzal Nature Preserve

Grant Township, IL

The property contains approximately 19 acres of wetlands. Fox Lake comprises the northern property line and Squaw Creek the western boundary. Roughly 30% of the property is open water. The entire site lies within a 100 year floodplain. Vegetation on non water areas is narrow leaf cattails with occasional willows. Shoreline erosion to the original soils is a major problem and has decreased the amount of land area significantly in the last 15 years. LCLC received the parcel in 2002 as a donation from the Bartizal (Pons) Family in memory of their mother, Henrietta Skala Bartizal. The family owned the property for over 85 years prior to the donation.
